Winter Is Here!

If you haven’t noticed temperatures have been dropping and we are finally in the heart of winter. With the cold weather here we now have to pay attention to potholes, both while driving and in your driveway or a parking lot. Have you ever hit a pothole while driving on the highway? We hope you haven’t, but if you have you know it causes a lot of damage. Be aware of potholes this winter and try to avoid them.

How do potholes form? Potholes normally form from frozen water. When it rains or snows, water enters the ground underneath the pavement. When the water freezes it expands. When the water in the ground freezes, the ground pushes up against the pavement. Consequently, the pavement will then expand as well and if it expands too much, it will bend and crack. The next time it rains or snows, water will seep into these cracks and the whole process will start over again. Constant traffic over the area does not help it either. Vehicles driving over the area chip the already broken pieces making it much worse.

If you notice any potholes or cracking forming in your driveaway or parking lot contact SLR right away. We’ll help fix the problem and prevent any damages to any vehicles or personal injuries if you unknowingly step into one. One of the best ways to prevent potholes is to preserve your pavement! Most potholes can be prevented by using preservation treatments early on before severe distresses are formed. Sealing cracks in a pavement is the most important step in preventing potholes.
